Debt, Equity and Bootstrapping — Pros & Cons
December 6, 2020 by Kaylan Pepin
Financing choices shape more than the balance sheet. They influence control, pace, risk tolerance, and which outcomes the company must optimize for.
Three different tools
Bootstrapping preserves ownership and discipline, but can constrain speed. Equity absorbs more uncertainty, but it dilutes ownership and adds partners. Debt preserves equity, but creates fixed obligations and requires a credible path to repayment.
The useful question
Instead of asking which funding source is best, ask which risk you are financing, how predictable the return is, and what trade-offs the founders are genuinely willing to accept.
